ATV insurance protects you, your machine, and your wallet, whether you are riding the trails near Ottawa or loading up for a weekend on Crown land. Here is when it is required in Ontario, what it covers, and how to get the right policy for the way you ride.

When ATV Insurance Is Required in Ontario

You are legally required to insure your ATV the moment you ride it on public roads, public trails, or Crown land. Under Ontario’s Off-Road Vehicles Act, an ATV used off your own property must be registered and carry a motor vehicle liability policy. Riding on public land without proof of insurance can mean fines that typically range from $200 to $1,000.

There is one clear exception. If you ride only on your own private property, insurance is not legally required. Even then, most owners carry coverage anyway, because a serious injury or a stolen machine is an expensive risk to take on alone. If your ATV lives at the cottage, it is also worth checking how it fits alongside your cottage and seasonal home insurance.

What ATV Insurance Covers

ATV insurance works much like auto insurance, with a mandatory core and optional layers you can add. The required piece is third-party liability, which protects you financially if you injure someone or damage their property while riding. Because an ATV ridden on public land is insured under a motor vehicle liability policy, that mandatory core also includes accident benefits, which help with medical and rehabilitation costs if you are injured.

From there, you choose the coverage that fits your machine and how you use it.

  • Comprehensive coverage protects against theft, vandalism, and damage that is not from a collision.
  • Collision coverage pays to repair or replace your ATV after an accident.
  • Specified perils covers named risks like fire, flood, hail, and theft, a lighter option than full comprehensive.

An ATV is part of the same off-road family as your other summer and winter machines, so the same broker can also handle your recreational vehicle insurance and snowmobile insurance.

What's Included in an ATV Insurance Policy?

At ONA, we’ll help you build a policy that reflects how you use your ATV.

ATV insurance coverage may include:

Liability Coverage

Protects you if you cause injury or property damage while operating your ATV. This is a required coverage in Ontario for riders using public land or roads.

Collision Coverage

Collision coverage covers the cost of repairing or replacing your ATV if it's damaged in a crash.

Comprehensive Coverage

Comprehensive coverage provides protection against non-collision risks, including theft, fire, vandalism, and extreme weather.

Uninsured Motorist Protection

Provides financial coverage if you're injured in an accident involving an uninsured or unidentified driver.

Accessory Coverage

Optional protection for equipment like racks, winches, custom wheels, radios, and more.

Your ONA broker will explain each option and help you customize your policy to match your riding habits and budget.

On-Trail and On-Road Rules

Where you ride changes the rules you need to follow. To ride along a public road or shoulder where ATVs are permitted, you must be at least 16 with a valid G2 or M2 licence or higher, wear an approved helmet, and carry insurance. On-road access depends on municipal bylaws, so where you can legally ride varies from town to town. Off-road on public trails and Crown land, registration and insurance still apply.

Ontario’s trail network, much of it maintained by the Ontario Federation of All-Terrain Vehicle Clubs, connects huge stretches of the province, and a trail permit is separate from your insurance. Insurance handles the financial risk, while the permit grants access. You need both to ride legally on managed trails. Riders who also enjoy two wheels on the highway often pair their ATV policy with motorcycle insurance through the same broker.

How Much Does ATV Insurance Cost in Ontario?

ATV insurance is one of the more affordable policies you will buy, though the exact premium depends on the machine and the rider. As a general guide, Canadian market figures for basic coverage in Ontario tend to run from about $200 to $500 per year, with fuller coverage often landing in the $300 to $800 range.

Those are general market figures, not a quote. Premiums vary depending on the make, model, and engine size of your ATV, your age and riding history, and the coverage you choose, and your broker will assess your specific situation. A high-powered sport quad will cost more to insure than an entry-level utility ATV, and a clean riding record helps.

How Much Liability Coverage Should You Carry?

Ontario sets the minimum third-party liability for an ATV at $200,000, but most riders are wise to carry more. A serious trail accident that injures another person can lead to a claim far larger than $200,000, and you would be personally responsible for anything above your limit.

Raising your liability limit to $1 million is a common choice, and the added cost is usually small relative to the protection it buys. It is the kind of trade-off your broker can price out for you, the same way they would on your personal insurance as a whole.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is ATV insurance in Ontario?

ATV insurance is generally affordable, often running a few hundred dollars a year, though there is no single price. The cost depends on your ATV’s make, model, and engine size, your riding history, and how much coverage you choose. A broker can compare insurers and give you an accurate quote for your machine.

What insurance do I need for an ATV?

At minimum, you need third party liability coverage to ride legally on public roads, trails, or Crown land in Ontario. Most riders add comprehensive or collision coverage to protect the ATV itself against theft, fire, and accident damage. The right mix depends on your machine’s value and how you ride.

Is ATV insurance mandatory in Ontario?

Yes, if you ride on public roads, public trails, or Crown land, your ATV must be registered and insured under a motor vehicle liability policy. The only exception is riding solely on your own private property. Riding on public land without insurance can result in fines.

Do you need insurance to ride an ATV on private property?

No, insurance is not legally required if you ride only on your own private property. That said, many owners still carry coverage, because injuries and theft can happen anywhere and the cost of an uninsured loss is high. A broker can explain affordable options for property-only riders.

Does ATV insurance cover theft?

It can, through comprehensive or specified perils coverage, but theft is not included in basic liability-only policies. If your ATV is valuable or stored at a cottage or rural property, theft protection is worth adding. Check the specific terms with your broker, since limits and conditions vary.
